Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera Latin Name: Aloe vera/Aloe barbadensis (Liliaceae). Colloquially known as Burn Plant, Medicine Plant, Saqal, or zabila. Physical Description: Succulent with long leaves and spikes of yellow or orange flowers. Habitat and Cultivation: Cultivated worldwide, easily potable: propagated by breaking off a small rooted plantlet from a mother plant. Native to tropical areas, especially Eastern and Southern Africa. Parts Used in Herbalism: Leaves. Constituents: Anthraquinones, Resins, Tannins, Polysaccharides, Aloectin B. Medicinal Actions & Uses: Emollient. Effective at healing wounds, especially burns and scrapes on the surface; and ulcers internally. Also has laxative properties. Magickal Actions & Uses: Aloe is particularly associated with luck and protection. When grown round the house it guards against evil from without and within (especially with regards to the prevention of household accidents).
