Alfalfa


Alfalfa Latin Name: Medicago sativa(Fabaceae). Also known as Lucerne, buffalo herb, jat, qadb, and purple medic. Physical Description: Three-lobed flowers ranging from yellow to violet-blue and spiraling seed pods Habitat and Cultivation: Grown in temperate climates (especially as a fodder crop), harvested in summer. Native to Asia, Europe, and North Africa. Parts Used in Herbalism: Aerial parts, sprouting seeds. Constituents: Isoflavones (Estrogenic), Coumarins (Estrogenic), Alkaloids, Vitamins, Porphyrins. History & Other Notes: attested to by Pliny in the first century AD with reference to Darius of Persia bringing alfalfa to Greece during the 5thcentury BCE. Medicinal Actions & Uses: Contains easily assimilated nutrients, especially suitable for convalescents, and in treating problems related to menstruation and menopause. Magickal Actions & Uses: Alfalfa protects against poverty and hunger.
