Symbolism of the Skeleton Key The skeleton key is a strong symbol for breaking through barriers and creating a safe passage to your goal. In root work and conjure, a key may be placed in a mojo bag, carried in a pocket or worn around your neck on a string, just to keep it close to the body.

Placing the key on your altar or hanging it in or above your doorway for protection are other common Magickal uses. A key hung above the interior of your main door is believed to be good for general protection, and more specifically, a good protection against losing your home.
